Neon and metallic inks for Direct-to-Film (DTF) transfers are classified as specialty inks or expanded gamut inks. Unlike standard DTF prints that use a four-color CMYK (cyan, magenta, yellow, and black) ink set, these specialty inks are designed to achieve effects that standard CMYK printing cannot.
Specialty inks
Neon and metallic inks are formulated differently to create specific visual effects:
- Neon inks: Also known as fluorescent inks, these are made with special pigments that produce extremely bright colors and can glow under UV or black light. They can deliver “punchier,” more vibrant results than what is possible with traditional CMYK.
- Metallic inks: These inks contain fine metal particles, such as silver or gold, that create a reflective, shiny effect on the printed surface. This adds a premium look to a design that standard inks cannot replicate.
Expanded gamut printing
For neon and metallic DTF printing, many commercial-grade printers use an expanded gamut ink set. This means they have additional channels for colors beyond the standard CMYK. These extra channels can be loaded with specialty inks like neon colors (e.g., fluorescent orange, green, and pink) and metallic inks, allowing for a much broader range of colors and effects.
